Earlier this week, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed HB 1834, the Data Center Accountability Act. While not perfect, this bill is a good start to reducing the harm that hyper-scale data centers are currently doing. All House Democrats supported this bill. Please let your representative know that you appreciate their support for good regulation of AI data centers.

What is it?

This bill is the first-ever major regulatory framework for data centers in Pennsylvania. It will:

• Shield households and small businesses from unfair energy cost increases

• Require data centers to support the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

• Give regulators real authority to hold the industry accountable

• Push new energy demand from data centers toward cleaner solutions

Why does it matter?

Data centers are expanding rapidly across Pennsylvania, driving up energy demand and shifting costs onto ratepayers. Without clear rules, Big Tech sets the terms. By passing HB 1834, the House is putting consumers and families first and enabling Pennsylvania to manage data center growth responsibly.
